Laguncularia racemosa – White Mangrove

Laguncularia racemosa, commonly known as the White Mangrove, is a tropical mangrove species naturally found along the coasts of the Americas, the Caribbean and western Africa. It grows in coastal wetlands, lagoons, estuaries and mangrove forests, where it is adapted to regular contact with saline water.

It is an attractive and unusual plant for open marine aquariums, refugiums and dedicated mangrove tanks.

Plants from our own cultivation

The Laguncularia racemosa plants we offer were germinated and grown by us from seed in seawater at a salinity of 35 ppt.

These are not plants that have been transferred from freshwater or low-salinity conditions. From the very beginning, they have developed in full-strength marine conditions.

As a result, they are already well adapted to marine aquariums and can be introduced directly into a properly maintained system with a similar salinity.

Characteristics

Laguncularia racemosa develops opposite, leathery, oval leaves with an attractive green colour. Young leaves may initially be lighter and gradually become darker and firmer as they mature.

A characteristic feature of this species is the presence of small glands near the base of the leaves, which are associated with the plant’s salt regulation.

Under suitable conditions, the plant gradually develops a strong root system and can eventually form a compact, branching, tree-like shape.

Growing conditions

Salinity: our plants have been grown from the beginning at 35 ppt
Temperature: approximately 22–28°C
Lighting: medium to very strong
Substrate: sand, gravel, mineral substrate, expanded clay or another stable and well-draining medium
Position: roots may remain submerged or in permanently moist substrate, while the leaves and most of the stem should stay above the water surface
Humidity: young plants benefit from increased air humidity
Growth rate: moderate, depending on light intensity, temperature and nutrient availability

Laguncularia racemosa in a marine aquarium

White Mangrove is an excellent choice for creating a natural above-water section of a marine aquarium. Several plants grown together can eventually create the appearance of a miniature mangrove forest.

The plant absorbs nutrients required for growth, including nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. However, a small number of mangroves should not be considered a replacement for conventional filtration or standard methods of controlling NO3 and PO4.

Important information

Our Laguncularia racemosa plants were not simply acclimated to saltwater — they actually germinated and grew in our system at 35 ppt salinity.

This is particularly important for plants intended for marine aquariums, as it reduces the stress associated with sudden changes in salinity.

New leaves may initially be light green. This is normal and they usually become darker as they mature.

Laguncularia racemosa is an attractive and relatively uncommon mangrove species in the aquarium hobby, making it an excellent addition to collections of Rhizophora, Bruguiera and other mangrove plants.
