Bruguiera sexangula, commonly known as the Orange Mangrove, is an attractive mangrove species naturally found in tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Oceania. It grows in mangrove forests, estuaries and coastal wetlands, where it is adapted to regular contact with saline and brackish water.
It is a rare and highly decorative plant for open marine aquariums, refugiums and dedicated mangrove tanks.
The Bruguiera sexangula plants we offer are grown in seawater at a salinity of 35 ppt and are doing very well under these conditions.
The plants have developed leaves and roots and are already actively growing young mangroves.
Bruguiera sexangula develops smooth, leathery green leaves arranged in opposite pairs. New growth may initially be noticeably lighter than older leaves and gradually becomes darker as it matures.
This species produces characteristic propagules from which new plants develop. Compared with some other mangrove species, the propagules of Bruguiera sexangula are relatively short and robust.
Under suitable conditions, the plant develops a strong root system and can eventually form a compact, branching, tree-like shape.
Salinity: our plants are grown at 35 ppt
Temperature: approximately 22–28°C
Lighting: medium to very strong
Substrate: sand, gravel, mineral substrate, expanded clay or another stable and well-draining medium
Position: roots may remain submerged or in permanently moist substrate, while the leaves and most of the stem should stay above the water surface
Humidity: young plants benefit from increased air humidity
Growth rate: moderate, depending on light intensity, temperature and nutrient availability
Mangroves absorb nutrients from the water for growth, including nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. However, individual plants should not be considered a replacement for conventional filtration or standard methods of controlling NO3 and PO4.
The main advantage of Bruguiera sexangula is its decorative appearance and the possibility of creating a natural above-water section of a marine aquarium. Several plants grown together can eventually create the appearance of a miniature mangrove forest.
Our Bruguiera sexangula plants are adapted to full marine salinity of 35 ppt.
New leaves may initially be light green or yellow-green. This is natural and they usually become darker as they mature.
The plant performs best under strong lighting, with its foliage kept above the water surface.
Bruguiera sexangula is an attractive and relatively uncommon mangrove species in the aquarium hobby, making it an excellent addition to collections of Rhizophora, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Laguncularia and other mangrove plants.
