Bruguiera gymnorhiza is an impressive mangrove species naturally occurring in tropical and subtropical coastal regions of the Indian Ocean and western Pacific. In the wild, it grows in mangrove forests, lagoons and intertidal zones, where it is regularly exposed to saline and brackish water.
It is a highly decorative plant for open marine aquariums, refugiums and dedicated mangrove tanks. Over time, it develops a strong root system and an attractive tree-like growth form.
Our Bruguiera gymnorhiza are grown and acclimated in full-strength seawater at 35 PSU. This means they can be introduced directly into a properly maintained marine aquarium without the need for gradual salinity acclimation.
The plants we offer have developed leaves and roots and are already actively growing young mangroves.
Bruguiera gymnorhiza develops large, thick, leathery green leaves arranged in opposite pairs. New growth is often noticeably lighter green and gradually becomes darker as the leaves mature.
This species is viviparous. The seed begins to develop while still attached to the parent tree, producing a distinctive elongated propagule. Once detached, the propagule is capable of rooting and establishing a new plant.
The long propagules are one of the characteristic features of this species and can reach 15–25 cm or more in well-developed specimens.
Salinity: our plants are grown at 35 PSU
Temperature: approximately 22–28°C
Lighting: medium to very strong
Substrate: sand, gravel, mineral substrate, expanded clay or another stable, well-draining medium
Position: the roots can remain submerged, while the leaves and most of the stem should stay above the water surface
Humidity: young plants benefit from increased air humidity
Growth rate: moderate, becoming noticeably faster under strong lighting and good growing conditions
Mangroves absorb nutrients from the water for their growth, including nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. However, a small number of plants should not be considered a replacement for efficient filtration or conventional methods of controlling NO3 and PO4.
The main advantage of Bruguiera gymnorhiza is its unique appearance and the possibility of creating a natural above-water section of a marine aquarium. Several plants grown together can eventually create the appearance of a miniature mangrove forest.
Our Bruguiera gymnorhiza plants are already fully adapted to marine salinity of 35 PSU.
New leaves may initially be light green or yellow-green and considerably paler than older leaves. This is normal during active growth, and the leaves usually become darker as they mature.
The plant grows best under strong lighting with its foliage kept above the water surface. Under suitable conditions, it can also be pruned to encourage a more compact and branched, tree-like growth form.
Bruguiera gymnorhiza is an excellent choice for marine aquarists who want to combine a reef aquarium with an attractive living terrestrial section and create the atmosphere of a true mangrove ecosystem.
